Prof Karnick taught CS at IIT Kanpur for 4 decades. He led the formation of the cognitive sciences department at the institute where he is currently an Honorary Professor. He was among the earliest instructors to teach CS771 – the foundational machine learning course and CS671 – the natural language processing course at IITK and influenced their evolution over the years. Broadly he is interested in understanding how the human brain/mind works. Research interests include AI and machine learning, programming languages, logic and reasoning.

His research is focused on bringing AI into clinical use, safely, ethically and cost-effectively.
